Facts and figures about Stone Cutting.

The Lapidary:

A Lapidary is the name given to a person who cuts, shapes and polishes gemstones, with the exception of Diamond cutters who are not generally referred to by this name, because of the specialised techniques used in Diamond cutting.

A Cabochon or Cabachon is a gemstone which has been shaped and polish, but not faceted. Cabochon cutting is generally used on opaque gemstones. Whilst faceted cutting is used for transparent stones to increase brilliance and sparkle. One exception to this rule though is amber, which is transparent but usually Cabochon cut.
